S1E37: Part II: ABA and CBT for Autistic Folks: Is It Harmful or Helpful?

Join host, Nicole Morris, LMFT and Mental Health Correspondent, as she welcomes back Dr. Jeremy Shuman, PsyD, for Part II of this 3 part series on Autism & OCD. Today’s episode is all about taking a closer look at Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). In Part I, Dr. Shuman provided a foundation for neurodiversity-affirming therapeutic approaches to mental health through a phenomenological lens for our autistic OCD Family Community members. This week, we’re looking at the medical model’s first line treatment of ABA and the OCD experts’ gold standards of Inference-Based CBT (I-CBT) and Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP). But even more broadly, we will zoom out to explore CBT as a whole. So what do you think: Is it harmful or helpful? We encourage you to join the discussion, because your conclusions might just surprise you.
